The fourth day of the 2026 ILCA 6 Masters World Championship in Athens delivered demanding and changeable conditions, with shifting winds and significant wave action forcing the race committee to adapt the schedule throughout the day.
Racing began in a south-westerly breeze of 6–9 knots from 200–225 degrees with significant waves. The first start was successfully completed for the Legends and Super Legends fleets, but rapidly changing conditions and a major wind shift prevented the remaining fleets from finishing their race, leading to an abandonment by the race committee.
As conditions evolved, racing resumed later in the day once a new wind direction settled. A south-easterly breeze of 6–9 knots from 160–180 degrees allowed the committee to continue with further races in similarly challenging sea states.
Great Grand Grand Master leader Timothy Woodford CAN praised the race management after a complex day on the water: “There were challenging conditions for the race committee. They did an excellent job today. The winds were variable in strength and direction. Decision making was difficult. I feel very fortunate to be in first place. I thought that I would be in third based on my results. The next two days of racing are going to be so much fun.”
Apprentices sailor Malli Triantafyllia GRE also reflected on a demanding but rewarding day: “Today’s races were quite challenging, with frequent changes and significant fluctuations in wind strength, which also caused delays to some of the starts. The race organizers have done a great job of getting many races completed under the best possible conditions. I am currently in second place and within the medal positions, and I hope to remain on the podium.”
