The first official race day of the 2026 ILCA 6 Youth World Championships got off to a slow start on Aarhus Bay, with very light and inconsistent winds causing delays throughout the opening day of the Qualifying Series.
AP was raised ashore at around 09.30 as the Race Committee waited for conditions to improve. The wind eventually picked up enough for the sailors to be sent onto the water, with Delta raised for the BRAVO course at 10.45 and for ALFA at 11.00.
Conditions remained difficult throughout the day, with the wind changing between almost nothing and just enough to get racing underway.
For Katherine Gunn, Great Britain, who is competing at her first ILCA 6 World Championship, the opening day brought a new challenge.
“It’s my first ILCA 6 World Championship. I raced the ILCA 4 Worlds last year, so it’s exciting to be here and start a new championship in the ILCA 6,” she said.
“It was a pretty light day, so finding the pressure and getting a good start were really important. Light winds can be difficult, because every little decision makes a difference.”

At around 15.30, AP was raised again as the wind dropped away. With conditions showing no sign of becoming stable enough for further racing, AP over A was displayed at 16.30, bringing the day to an end.
The women therefore finish the opening day with one race completed, while the men are still waiting for their first race of the championship.
Gunn is hoping for slightly stronger conditions over the coming days.
“It looks like we’re going to get a bit more wind over the next few days, so hopefully a little less AP as well. We might also see some different wind directions, which will bring a new challenge.”

The Qualifying Series continues on Saturday, with the Race Committee hoping for more consistent conditions and another opportunity to get the championship schedule underway.
