ILCA in The Olympics
The single-handed ILCA dinghy โlong known as the Laserโ is one of the most popular boats in the world, celebrated for its accessibility and one-design simplicity: every athlete competes on identical equipment, making it a true test of seamanship, fitness, and tactics.
The ILCA 7 made its Olympic debut as the men's "Laser Standard" class at the Atlanta 1996 Games, and the ILCA 6 joined the programme as the women's "Laser Radial" class at Beijing 2008.
Together, the two classes have since become the most universal in Olympic sailing, consistently attracting more participating nations than any other class in the programme. This is no coincidence: the boat's simplicity and low cost of entry lower the barriers to competition for sailors from every continent, making the ILCA the class that most closely reflects the Olympic ideal of global participation.
