Tactical Racing Defines Penultimate Day of the ILCA 7 Masters Worlds

The penultimate day of the 2026 ILCA 7 Masters World Championship in Athens delivered two more races in consistent conditions, bringing the fleet to ten races completed and setting the stage for a decisive final day.

Both races were sailed on schedule in a 7–10-knot south-south-easterly breeze from 160–175 degrees. Choppy waves and subtle shifts across the racecourse continued to challenge competitors, rewarding sailors who could best anticipate the changing patterns and position themselves accordingly.

Mark Lyttle GBR, who leads the Grand Masters category heading into the final day, highlighted the tactical complexity of the racing: “The races are very similar in terms of conditions. Sailors have to constantly search every time for the wind. It is very challenging, and that is why you see so many different results from one day to the next. You can be first in one race and then finish tenth in the next. In this event, under these conditions, strategy plays an even greater role. It is not easy to predict what will happen, which is why you have to be prepared for everything.
First place in my category will be decided in the final two races, where everything is still wide open. I may currently be in first place, but that does not mean anything at this stage. As for the event itself, the race committee is doing an excellent job, the hospitality is outstanding, and the sailors have everything they need. If you ask me what is easier—to be a president or a sailor—I would say that both are very difficult.”

With ten races completed, several categories remain undecided heading into Tuesday’s final day of competition. Two races are scheduled, after which the 2026 ILCA 7 Masters World Champions will be crowned in Athens.
