Halfway Mark Reached at 2026 ILCA 6 Masters World Championship

2026 ILCA 6 Master Worlds Day 3

The fleet reached the halfway point of the 2026 ILCA 6 Masters World Championship on Wednesday, completing another two races in Athens to bring the series total to six races ahead of the scheduled Reserve/Rest Day.

The day began with a light southerly breeze of 5–7 knots from 170–180 degrees and choppy seas for the opening race. Conditions then strengthened to 10–12 knots from 160–170 degrees for Race 2, providing a more demanding test for the competitors. Both races were started on time and completed without delay, allowing the championship schedule to remain firmly on track.

Grand Masters leader Bruce Savage AUS experienced a day of recovery and resilience on the racecourse: “The first race was quite light wind which is usually not best for me, I was doing quite well, in 5th position, but I lost my way with boats passing me left and right. I was probably 20th but I managed to be 8th so I am happy. In the second race I started in the middle of the line and was fighting around 5th place. At the end of the second upwind I got a nice shift on the left and went in second place. Unfortunately, on the reach I was penalized by the jury boat for too much pumping and had to do penalty turns so I finished 5th. I am very impressed with the organization and the friendliness of all of the officials, creating a great atmosphere.”

Greek sailor Maria Vlachou reflected on both the championship and the strong performances of the home team: “We are already halfway through the event, and everything is going exceptionally well, both for the championship and for the performance of the Greek sailors. It is wonderful to compete in sailing in your own country, and we hope that by the end of the event we will be celebrating as many medals as possible. I am currently in first place in the Masters category, but there is still a long way to go before the job is done. The priority now is to rest tomorrow, clear our minds, and then be back on the water from Friday onward.”

With six races completed and discard scores now beginning to influence the standings, the championship remains finely balanced across the divisions. Thursday is scheduled as the Reserve/Rest Day before racing resumes on Friday for the final three days of competition.
